Junior & Senior Moot: Nominations Now Open

It is time for the blue-ribbon competitions for the year once more - nominations for the 2010 Mallesons Stephen Jaques Senior Moot and Allens Arthur Robinson Junior Moot are now open!

Mooting involves the practice of appellate advocacy before a panel of judges. Teams of two are given a problem scenario on a particular area of law and present both written and oral submissions on their client’s case. It is a great way to hone your legal research and oral presentation skills and is also a lot of fun. On top of that, there is $100 in it for the winning team, along with a trip to Adelaide for this year’s ALSA conference in July!

The competition will be run as follows -

• Senior Moot: Monday 3rd May - Friday 7 May

• Junior Moot - Monday 10th May - Friday 14 May

Bear in mind that the Junior Moot is only open to those students who have either not entered the Junior Moot or an external competition through QUT before. Further, there will be a moot run solely for students in first year in the second semester.

For those of you who are participating in the Negotiation exercise, here are the slides that were used in the Negotiation exercise that was run on Monday.

If you could not make the workshop, the slides provide a great insight on how to effectively structure your negotiation plan, what needs to be included and tips on how to succeed during the competition.

For those of you who haven’t competed before, it’s a must have material when preparing for your upcoming competition.

The start of a new semester is almost upon us - and what better way is there to start the year than by nominating for the QUOTALS Corrs Chambers Westgarth Negotiation Competition. Students compete in teams of two, going head-to-head with a view to coming to a mutual agreement over a particular factual scenario.

The competition will be held between the 22-25 March, with the final to be held at Corrs office.

Workshop - The workshop will be held by Jessica Bain in Room Z308 from 6PM-7:30PM on Thursday July 30.
Nominations Close – Saturday 1 August.
Problem Released – Saturay 1 August.
Rounds – Monday 3 August to Thursday 6 August (Week 3)
Final – Friday 14 August (Venue TBA)

We will also need some students to volunteer as clients – feel free to put on whatever personality suits! Email us to be a client or nominate for the competition (either as a team or individually and we’ll partner you up) at competitions@quotals.com

QLSA Conference 2009

QUT representatives braved the wind, rain and a 6am start to compete at the QLSA (Queensland Law Students Association) practical legal competitions at Bond University on the Gold Coast last Sunday 7 May.

2009 heralded the second year of the competitions which were a resounding success with delegates competing against students from James Cook University, University of Queensland, Griffith (Nathan and Gold Coast) and Bond.

Jamie Nuich and Shaan Stone, our pre-eminent Negotiators took the competition as an opportunity to investigate different techniques in anticipation of the forthcoming ALSA Conference in July while Tim Alexander refined his trial techniques in a performance worthy of the rainmaker in the Witness Examination Competition. Congratulations to Lara Soldi and Sarah Jackson who took out the Client Interviewing Competition.

University of Queensland took out the mooting competition with Tim Mason and Jules Moxon beating Bond University in a final that went down to wire at the Banco Court on Monday 18 May 2009. Tim and Jules earned the right to represent Queensland at the 22nd LAWASIA Conference, which will be held in November in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Special thanks to the Queensland Law Society for its generosity in providing sponsorship for the two boys to attend the conference.

ALSA Conference 2009

The 31st Australian Law Students Association (ALSA) Conference will be held from the 13th–19th July 2009 in Brisbane at QUT’s Gardens Point and Griffith’s South Bank campuses and is shaping up to be the best yet.

This annual event is one of the largest student conferences in Australia, and the only conference of its kind for law students. It is open to every Law Student Society member in Australia, New Zealand and South-east Asia and delegates from all universities around Australia with teams of around 20 each usually attend. The 7 day event is jam packed with social activities, most of which come with food and drinks included.

Some of these are:

Opening Gala Dinner at the GABBA Cricket Ground.
Closing Gala Dinner at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Cocktail Night at Jade Buddha’s Shadow Lounge.
State of Origin Night at the Normanby Hotel.
Theme Night.
Pub Crawl.
ALSA Legal Advocacy Competitions.
Australian Legal Education Forums.
Day trips to various exciting tourist destinations in South-East Queensland.

Also, this year will see the introduction of a ‘break day’ which will give all delegates (including competitors and councillors) a chance to relax and enjoy some of the best that South-east Queensland has to offer. Delegates can choose between accommodation and non-accommodation packages.
