In doing so, he is seeking feedback on how its looking and how it could be used in Professional Responsibility. These students should be in either their Third or Fourth year and it does not matter ne way or the other whether they’ve done Professional Responsibility as yet.

Get geared up! Queensland’s legal profession is gathering together to celebrate Q150 and reflect on the legal milestones of the last 150 years.

Discover all the different legal services available in your community and how you can access them, while you learn about Queensland’s legal system during Queensland Law Week.  This year it was held between 11-17 May 2009 at the Brisbane Magistrates Court, 363 George Street, Brisbane CBD, with professionals giving out important information, advice, entertainment and giveaways.

It’s a great opportunity to get information and guidance about:

• accessing legal services
• accessing legal professionals
• accessing the courts
• services provided by JAG and industry agencies
• career opportunities.

The week included an insider’s look at searching for civil files at the Supreme and District Courts, ceremonial sittings, information sessions on being a court volunteer and a self-representative litigant, a law hypothetical on the indigenous over-representation in our criminal justice system, a trivia night, a walk for justice and tours of the courts.

It’s a great chance to get to know Brisbane’s legal system and network with the top people in Brisbane’s legal community. It is the one time that everyone will be there so make sure you don’t miss it!

Mentors act as a source of information and a sounding board, offering guidance and encouragement to students within their chosen field of expertise. Student’s commitment to the scheme includes attending a briefing session, making the initial contact with the mentor and driving the ongoing relationship throughout the year – March to November. As a general guide, mentors and students make contact for one hour per fortnight.

This is not a work experience scheme, and no promise of employment is made or sought in a mentoring relationship. Rather, it’s about receiving guidance from a professional in a field that is of interest to you.

What is ALSA?

ALSA is the Australian Law Students’ Association. It is the peak representative body for law students throughout the nation. Individual Law Societies such as QUOTALS are affiliated with ALSA and participate in the broader community of law students as a result of this affiliation – which is incredibly diverse!

What can you expect from the ALSA team this year?

Every year, ALSA holds two council meetings at various places around Australia to debate current issues facing law students, but sometimes to deal with much more interesting work such as drafting the current Melbourne Model Paper. For more details see http://www.alsa.asn.au .

ALSA also hosts one major conference each year and this is the most eventful occasion on the ALSA calendar with up to 700 law students from around Australia attending. The ALSA annual conference provides a national stage for competitors to demonstrate their legal prowess.  QUOTALS and QUT have typically been strong competitors at these conferences and have produced some very strong mooters, negotiators and interviewers – and this is tradition we desperately wish to continue!

During this one week conference a range of educational and social events are held including, centrally, the national finals of student law society’s advocacy competitions, two gala dinners and the Australian Legal Education Forum.

This year the conference is going to be held between QUT and Griffith at our respect Gardens Point and South Bank campuses, so we are particularly on display! The ALSA Conference Committee can do with as much help as possible so if you would like to be involved please contact alsa@quotals.com and we can forward you on to the relevant people.

In March 2008 Australian Law Students’ Association (ALSA) Council meeting, Bond and Griffith University law societies, UQ, QUT and the relevant Queensland ALSA office bearers voted to form the Queensland Law Students’ Association.

Objectives

The Association has two short-term objectives. The first is to provide a knowledge-sharing forum for the executives of Queensland’s law students’ societies. This will involve helping to establish a society at the University of Southern Queensland’s two campuses (Springfield and Toowoomba), and helping out JCU. It is envisaged that there will be 2-3 meetings a year of Presidents and Vice Presidents (Education) to facilitate this.

The second short-term objective is to establish a Queensland law competitions championship (mooting, client interviewing, negotiation, witness examination and paper presentation). This would most likely occur in the lead-up to the Australian Championships that occur in July at the ALSA Conference.

This second objective has already been achieved through the inaugural QSLA Conference which was held by the Griffith Nathan Law Society in the July of 2008 and the second annual Conference recently held at Bond in May 2009.

The final objective is for the QLSA to act as a liaison between students and other peak bodies such as the Queensland Law Society and the Queensland Bar Association.

Competitions

The winners of QUOTALS Internal Competitions have to first right of refusal to represent QUT at the QLSA Conference.  If the winners of the decline the invitation, it then becomes the discretion of the respective runner–ups.  If they decline the invitation, the process will be conduct by general application open to all Bond Law Students.
